Spectacular
storm over Monmouth on 10th May 2006 evening
We are a mine of useful information
and suggestions to help you have a really good holiday, with lots of
maps, books and leaflets to show you how to get about, the easiest
or quickest or most beautiful and exciting routes you might take,
and even help you plan your holiday to suit our very changing
climate..
Monmouth has some great shops to browse in, lots of pubs, eating
houses, restaurants and tea rooms tucked away in picturesque nooks
and crannies, a museum, dedicated to Nelson, and also having art and
other exhibitions on regularly. The famous Monnow Bridge
has now been closed to vehicular traffic and is safe to walk
around. Boats are available for hire on the River Wye and you
can hire a canoe and be taken up by car as far as Ross-on-Wye and
come down through the lovely Wye Valley on the water through the rapids
via Symonds Yat (a great place to walk round and have lunch) and
back to Monmouth for supper, a hot shower and comfortable bed. I
can recommend The Saracens Head Pub in Symonds Yat West for lunch and supper
(booking recommended, its so popular).
For a good and picturesque walk is the Kymin Hill, the
highest point of Monmouth and part of the Offa's Dyke Walk.
You can see five counties from the top on a clear day. Another
good day's walk is along part of the Wye Valley Walk from Monmouth
to Symonds Yat, where you can stop for lunch, visit Yat Rock and
return over the hanging bridge onto the other side of the
river. Back for a hot shower and out again for dinner in one
of the good food restaurants in town. You can choose from
four Indian, a Chinese, a Mexican, or really good English
restaurants or one of the many pubs here or go a little further out
of town, so much choice!. There is a good Golf Club in
Monmouth, and the Rolls Golf Course on the outskirts. Fishing is
available on all the Monmouth rivers, if you need a license, please
let me know.
Hereford town with its great church, Chepstow and its spectacular
castle, and Abergavenny and the Black Mountains are only 17 miles
away. The beautiful Gower Coast is a day out.
